Will Universal Credit pay for a training course? ›

Universal Credit Standard Allowance

The amount you will get in 2022-23 is: £265.31 a month for single claimants under 25. £334.91 a month for single claimants aged 25 or over. £416.45 a month for joint claimants both under 25.

Scholarships and grants are two ways that you can pay for college without working. Both options give you money for college that you don't have to pay back.

At college, this can range from a little over 4 hours to about 20 hours face-to-face teaching per week. At university, full-time education will typically be about 33 hours of study per week. This is a combination of both independent and in-person study. Typically, teaching will be about 21 hours per week.

Working hours in term time must not exceed 10 or 20 a week, and you can work full time outside term time. "Week" means any 7-day period starting on a Monday.

Universal Credit will be calculated based on your income. This will include your income from student loans for maintenance and student grants. If you could get a student loan for maintenance but do not claim it, your Universal Credit will be calculated as if you had been given the loan.

Special Support Grant

You could be eligible if you receive certain benefits, qualify for Disabled Students' Allowance or are a single parent. SSG pays up to £3,475 a year in Northern Ireland, and up to £5,161 a year in Wales. Just like the Maintenance Grant, it's means-tested and doesn't have to be repaid.

The scheme offers people claiming disability allowance under different payments multiple hours of driving lessons but many people might not be aware of how to claim it.

Most, but not all, full-time students are not entitled to Housing Benefit. New Housing Benefit claims can only be considered from students in temporary accommodation (under Homelessness Prevention legislation), certain supported accommodation and those who have reached State Pension Age.

You can get PIP, Adult Disability Payment Scotland, Child Disability Payment Scotland or Attendance Allowance even if you are a full-time student. If you are disabled, are aged under Pension age and need help with your personal care or mobility needs, you can get Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
